Now delete the 18% GST line. That\u2019s your new bill from 22 September 2025\u2014because GST on individual health (and life) insurance is now 0%. This isn\u2019t a festive discount; it\u2019s the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What exactly changed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Before:<\/strong> Most individual health (and life) premiums carried <strong>18% GST<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Now:<\/strong> <strong>GST = 0%<\/strong> on <strong>individual<\/strong> health and life insurance <strong>from 22 Sep 2025<\/strong> (as per the 56th GST Council decisions).<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This means the tax line disappears and you pay <strong>only the base premium<\/strong> on eligible policies issued or renewed on\/after that date.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who gets 0% (and who doesn\u2019t)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Covered at 0% GST:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your individual health insurance (including family floater and senior citizen plans.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your individual life insurance (term, endowment, ULIP, etc.) These are explicitly covered under the Council\u2019s recommendation to exempt individual health and life insurance.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Not covered \/ unchanged by this announcement:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Employer group health policies (company-bought)<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Motor, home, travel and other general insurance classes &#8211;&nbsp; The exemption targets individual health &amp; life policies, other categories weren\u2019t part of this rate cut<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-much-will-you-actually-save\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How much will you actually save?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of it as removing an 18% topper from last year\u2019s total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Premium \u20b910,000 \u2192 earlier <strong>\u20b911,800<\/strong> \u2192 now <strong>\u20b910,000<\/strong> (<strong>save \u20b91,800<\/strong>)<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Premium \u20b920,000 \u2192 earlier <strong>\u20b923,600<\/strong> \u2192 now <strong>\u20b920,000<\/strong> (<strong>save \u20b93,600<\/strong>)<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Premium \u20b930,000 \u2192 earlier <strong>\u20b935,400<\/strong> \u2192 now <strong>\u20b930,000<\/strong> (<strong>save \u20b95,400<\/strong>)<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Media reports and analyst estimates say the effective reduction is about <strong>15% of last year\u2019s total <\/strong>(because you\u2019re removing an 18% add-on). Either way, the saving is immediate and visible on the invoice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"the-60-second-checklist\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The 60-second checklist&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Date check:<\/strong> Is your policy <strong>on\/after 22 Sep 2025<\/strong>? Good\u2014GST on eligible individual policies must be <strong>0%<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Invoice scan:<\/strong> Look for <strong>GST\/IGST\/CGST\/SGST<\/strong>. The amount should be <strong>0<\/strong> on individual health\/life.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>If GST shows up:<\/strong> Ask for a <strong>revised quote\/invoice<\/strong>. Car, bike, home, travel, and employer <strong>group<\/strong> covers follow their own GST rules.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Missing the date:<\/strong> An invoice <strong>before<\/strong> 22 Sep 2025 may still show 18% GST legit for that date. Don\u2019t lapse a policy just to chase the date; coverage continuity matters.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Not checking the breakup.<\/strong> After the effective date, the GST line should be <strong>nil<\/strong> on eligible policies. If you see tax, <strong>push back<\/strong> with the official reference.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Confusing GST with income-tax benefits.<\/strong> Section 80D (health premium deduction) continues, You now simply pay (and claim) the <strong>actual lower premium<\/strong> without GST. (Policyholders still get the deduction but the base is just smaller)<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"a-note-on-will-insurers-hike-base-prices\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A note on \u201cwill insurers hike base prices?\u201d<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Some coverage notes that with <strong>GST at 0%<\/strong>, insurers may have less room for <strong>input tax credit<\/strong> on their costs. That\u2019s a back-office issue, The Council\u2019s intent is <strong>consumer relief<\/strong>, and competition should keep pricing honest.
